Riding a bicycle is a great way to contribute to the preservation of our eco system and environment here on our great planet earth. Many people are concerned with pollution and many other things that damage and dissolve the ozone and cause the atmosphere to be dirty. If we all contributed with one small thing that we can change in our daily living routines to help with the protection of the earth, perhaps we could, as a collective, make a substantial impact for the better.

One way to go green and contribute to the preservation of our environment is sometimes riding a bicycle instead of starting up the car or motorcycle. Driving and operating vehicles is one thing that many countless people do on a daily basis that harms the environment.

Exhaust from cars damages the ozone in a irreparable manner. What we do to the ozone negatively can not be repaired, which is why it is very important to do all that we can within our means to protect it. In addition to damaging the ozone, pollutants released by vehicles that run on combustion engines affects the health of human beings rather adversely.

Air pollutants damage not just the ozone layer, but also the lungs and respiratory systems of people. It can contribute to causing, or worsen, certain respiratory illnesses and diseases such as asthma, emphysema, COPD, and even pneumonia.

Do not get me wrong because I do believe that driving, in most cases, is a necessity of life in this modern age. However, if we just dedicated one day or one short route to the use of bicycles and cycling as a method of transportation, it can, in a small way, make a big difference to the health of humans and other living beings, and also the health of the our home, the earth.

Not only do we contribute to the well-being of the environment and the respiratory health of people, but also we can greatly increase our overall physical health.

Cycling takes a measure, big or small depending on the length that we travel while cycling, of physical strength and endurance. It also takes a measure of determination and discipline. By trading a vehicle for a bicycle, even if it is just once or twice every so often, we are able to get some exercise. This gives us the opportunity to build stamina, strengthen our muscular structure, get an aerobic workout, and experience the mental clarity you are able to get while enjoying the great bicycle ride.

Although there are many ways to go green, cycling is more than worthy of consideration. Besides helping with saving what is left our healthy earth, there are more great perks and benefits to make adding cycling into our routines look very appealing.

We know a lot about what a great working environment is.

In a great working environment the mission is being accomplished and morale is high. It’s the “user” side of the two key leadership objectives: accomplish the mission and care for your people.

Most people know exactly what I mean by a great working environment. They may not be able to list characteristics, or point to research, but they’ve usually experienced one. So have you.

Think about a time in your life when it was great to come to work. If you’re lucky there are lots of them. If you’re really lucky, now is one of those times.

What was it like then? I’ll bet you were excited about the work you were doing, and you knew that it was appreciated. You almost certainly felt that you were being treated fairly and that you had some control over what you got to do.

There’s been quite a bit of formal research into the factors that make up a great working environment. Here’s a quick summary of what the research tells us make for a great working environment.

* Interesting and Meaningful Work

* Clear and Reasonable Expectations

* Frequent and Usable Feedback

* Fairness (Consequences = Performance)

* Consistency (Predictability)

* Maximum Control Possible Over Work Life

In my training classes, I often do an exercise where participants identify the times when they were in a great working environment and what that was like. The language is often a bit different from the formal research, but the same things come up over and over again.

Interesting and Meaningful Work

People want to do work that’s interesting and meaningful. They want what they do to be enriching for them and important to others.

Different people define interesting in different ways. For some people, it means that they’re learning a lot, having lots of personal growth. For others, the most important thing is that there are lots of different situations to deal with or lots of different problems to solve.

Sometimes “interesting” is not so much about the work itself as it is about the people you work with. This selffulfillment comes from being part of a team, an elite group, or just a bunch of folks you like working with.

It’s also important for the work to have value to others. The “others” can be the whole world, or just your customers or the people you work with.

Clear and Reasonable Expectations

People like to know what’s expected of them. They like to know the rules of the game.

Expectations need to be clear. At the supervisory level, that may mean laying out detailed, stepbystep procedures. At the management level expectations may come out of discussions with several people. At the leadership level, slogans and other brief statements that people can use as a “test” of their plans or actions are usually the most effective.

Don’t underestimate the values of frequency, simplicity, and memorability when you’re communicating expectations. You have to communicate the important things over and over in memorable terms.

In fact, repeating things is one way of telling people what’s important. Slogans are great for this. So are devices like pocket reminder cards with simple messages or messages in table form.

Use your regular forms of communication, like newsletters, emails, sales bulletins to reinforce your leadership message. Reinforce your written communications of expectations with oral communications. Reinforce your formal communications with informal ones.

Remember that you need to state expectations for the performance you want, but you also need to be clear about the consequences of performance that’s beyond or not quite up to standard.

Frequent and Usable Feedback

People like to know how they’re doing. Feedback is how they find out. To work, the feedback must be frequent (lots of small course corrections) and usable.

How frequent is frequent? The answer, which sounds something like a copout is: “As often as necessary?”

Some people want and need a lot of feedback. Other people prefer to be left alone most of the time to do their work. You have to know who needs what and in what situations.

The idea is to make lots of small course corrections on the way to the clear target you’ve established with your expectations. Lots of small adjustments are almost always easier and more effective then a few giant ones.

Feedback also has to be usable. Time your feedback so it reaches people when it is the most helpful. In most situations, that means you want feedback as close to the performance as possible. If you can set up a system so people can get their own feedback, so much the better.

Work on your communications skills so you deliver feedback in the most effective way possible. Learn about different ways that people process information, and match your communication to their preferred style. Learn about Social Styles and other ways that help you communicate with people in the ways they most like to be communicated with.

Fairness (Consequences = Performance)

People want to know that they (and others) are being fairly rewarded based on their performance. This is one of those words that requires definition. Otherwise, it becomes one of those words that everyone agrees with, but no two people have a common definition for.

For us, fairness means that the consequences of the performance are determined by the quantity and quality of the performance. One of the people in my class put it in almost Biblical terms: “The good shall be rewarded and the underachievers shall be punished in accordance with their results.”

This ties back to reasonable expectations. It depends on regular and usable feedback.

Consistency (Predictability)

Consistency means predictability. Subordinates want to know how their supervisor will react in a given situation. Consistency also relates to predictability in terms of performance.

Your people want to know how to predict your reaction in different situations. If they can’t, they worry about whether or not to trust you.

According to some management studies, consistency (predictability) is the single most effective standard to establish with your own leadership behavior. It’s actually another form of communication. It’s a way of walking the talk.

Leadership by example means that you act out the values and principles that you say you and others stand for. To quote Howell Raines on Bear Bryant: “Coach Bryant had an idea about how a man ought to act and if you watched him, you could figure out what it was.”

Leadership by example means that you consistently pay attention to the important things, consistently reward good performance, consistently see that rewards and punishments are meted out fairly.

Maximum Control Possible over Work Life

People want to have a say about things that affect their life. You can make that happen for them by giving them as much control as possible over issues that affect them at work.

Obviously that varies from person to person and situation to situation. Some people like to be left alone. Others want to see you frequently.

Some people are qualified to make lots of decisions about their work. Others need to develop their skills a bit before they can do the same.

Some people work hard and make an effort to do the job. Others slack off.

It’s probably a good general rule to allow individuals as much control of the basic decisions about their work as they are capable of handling and willing to handle. In today’s flatter organizations, this is easier to do from an organizational standpoint, but it’s hard for many of us from a personal standpoint.

Part of your job as a boss is to create a great working environment for the people who work for you. It’s not easy, but the result can be both high morale and high productivity.

Mention the word meditation, and the image that comes to mind is that of a person sitting in a lotus position on top of a mountain. The environment around him is very serene and quiet, surrounded by nature. Many believe that if the environmental conditions are not right, it would not be possible to meditate. However, most are not aware that meditation can be performed in almost any kind of environment.

Although the ideal setting to perform meditation would be a quiet and undisturbed place, this option may not always be available. Those of us living in the city or in suburban areas may not always enjoy the peace and quiet that the ideal meditation environment should have. Making a trip to some far away place to meditate would also be unnecessary and time consuming.

In reality, if you intend to practice meditation, any kind of environment will do. With practice, you can meditate in your room, sitting on your bed (a very popular choice), at your office desk, while commuting to work in the bus or train, even in the restroom. You can perform meditation in just about any place you can think of.

It would be best if you can get some time away from people when you’re about to start meditation. Getting some distance away from others will help you to relax and prepare for your meditative session in a more quiet setting. The only time when it is appropriate to meditate with other people around you is when they are also involved in the meditation session as well. Group meditations can sometimes be very motivating. It is easier to be still for longer periods, because everyone else is sitting silent around you.

Many people performing meditation prefer to use some form of music during the session. Generally, any kind of music can be played, but you must take care to ensure that the music you choose isn’t going to distract and move you away from your main focus. The best kind of music is the soft and gentle kind. These kinds of music promote a sense of calm and relaxation, and are ideal for meditation. Sometimes, you can use nature sounds as a backdrop. Sounds of chirping birds, a distant thunderstorm, or a waterfall all bring you a step closer to nature. You don’t have to go into the outdoors to experience these sounds. Many of them are available on CD.

So, with this newfound knowledge, go forth and meditate. Stop giving yourself excuses even if the environment you’re in may seem less than perfect. With constant practice, you’ll soon find that you’ll be adept at meditating just about anywhere.

Happy meditating!

Anna asked:

If everyone in this world threw garbage and litter indiscriminately wherever they went, the environment as we knew it would soon be in ruins.

Litter in our surroundings is an important environmental issue, which many people overlook. While a majority of people do know that littering is a bad thing, many continue to carelessly scatter their trash around nonetheless.

A host of problems stem from littering, and as a result of some people’s inability to control this habit, the environment has been suffering. Money is also wasted because of it. The government has to employ people to pick up trash, and that means tax money.

Littering can be hazardous to one’s own health as well. Trash in an area attracts vermin and bacteria. Broken glass and other sharp objects are dangerous when they are left lying around in public places.

Litter is harmful to wildlife as well. Plastic can cause animals such as birds to choke, when they mistake it for food. And, even worse, small bits of plastic can accumulate in the stomach of a bird, never digesting or decomposing, to the point where there is no more room for real food and the bird starves to death with a full stomach.

Lastly, but most obviously, litter makes an area look bad. When a large amount of litter can be found in a particular environment, it reflects badly on the people who live there.

Sources of Litter in the Environment

Probably no one is completely innocent of ever littering. And the environment is what is essentially being punished by it. Pedestrians drop garbage in the streets. Motorists throw their trash out of their windows. Trailers, when not properly covered, can have some of their load blown away by the wind. Some households dispose of their garbage improperly and irresponsibly.

Even commercial places of business are guilty of this one. Events which create large amounts of litter can overflow to other neighboring areas, if their organizers don’t plan things right. Construction sites can produce significant amounts of litter, due to improper waste management.

These are just some examples of the sources of litter your our areas.

Misconceptions

There are misconceptions about what constitutes litter. Some people think that if an item is organic (and will “turn into dirt”) it’s alright to throw it anywhere. Banana peels, apple cores, and the like, are just some things that come to mind on this one. But in reality, throwing garbage around, organic or otherwise, is littering. And the environment is adversely affected by it.

Why do people litter? Quite frankly, the main reason is simple laziness.

Our environment can be made much more attractive if people simply use garbage cans properly.

If you have garbage to dispose of, and there’s isn’t a garbage can nearby, then wrap your trash up (in a napkin, plastic, paper bag, etc) and place it in your pocket or carry it with you until you reach a garbage can. Also, make sure that the trash actually goes into the garbage can, and does not fall to the side.

It’s all a simple matter of proper waste disposal, which is vital for our environments and for our ecosystems.

The truth is, we all know about the problem. Now its time to act on it, if you haven’t been. But if you already do have proper and responsible waste disposal habits, remember that you can make a difference by encouraging others to follow your example.

When we dispose of our garbage properly, instead of polluting our environment, it does more than just help our locale to look good - we all feel better about it as well.
