As a parent, it is your responsibility to instill good values to your children, so that they will grow as responsible individuals. And one good value that you can teach your children is being environmentally friendly. It is best to start teaching them the importance of caring for the environment at a young age, so they can carry that value with them when they grow up.

• Expose them to nature. Take your kids to the zoo or a wildlife rehabilitation center to learn more about the different kinds of animals. Teach them about the importance of treating animals with care and respect. You can also take your kids to go camping. Let them observe the plants, trees and flowers in the forest. Exposing your kids to the environment, will help them appreciate the value of caring for the environment.

• Grow a garden. Ask your kids’ favorite flowers or vegetables and grow them in your backyard. Remind them to always water the plants and flowers in the garden so that they will grow beautifully. Growing a garden also teaches your kids to be responsible. You can also add a fun twist to your kids’ gardening by taking their pictures to use as designs for print postcards. Let them design their own nature postcard printing materials and send them to grandma and grandpa or to their friends.

• Get your kids involved in an environmental organization. Research about environmental organizations for your kids on the Internet. Let them participate in the organization’s activities so they can take part in saving and protecting the environment. Your kids can also learn many facts about the environment through their active participation in the activities of the environmental education.

• Adopt a pet. Visit a pound or inquire from an animal rights organization to find a pet that you can adopt. Pet adoption can help your kids be sensitive to the feelings and welfare of animals.

There is a constant pressure to come up with better sources of energy today. When we are facing the impact to our environment that our current methods of energy give, it is necessary that we find alternative sources to lessen the impact. The energy that is contained in the earth is one of the ways that we can minimize the impact of our ever increasing energy consumption on the earth. Geothermal energy is one of the methods that have been explored for helping the environment.

There is a high cost associated with installing a geothermal, but most people who are interested in lessening the impact on the earth are not deterred by this cost. The concerns of the earth take a greater precedence over the concerns of our wallets. There is also an energy savings associated with heating and cooling the home with geothermal energy.

These systems are increasing in popularity as more people learn the benefits that can be found in using a geothermal energy system. When there are more people using this type of heating and cooling systems in their homes there will be less need for the oil that we are currently using. The people who are interested in keeping the environment safe from harm will find this the biggest advantage to using this type of system.

The problem of our dependency on oil has been brought to everyone’s attention. This is the reason that these systems have become more popular in recent years. The cost of oil and the impact on family budgets is another reason that alternatives are being sought at a rapid rate. The potential of these systems to help our environment and decrease the costs associated with the current energy methods make them a wonderful choice for many people.

Other countries have already discovered the power that the earth can deliver. In regions that contain volcanic springs, the inhabitants have already found a way to harness that power. Man’s nature is to constantly improve on the systems that we have in place.

If you are interested in finding a lower cost alternative to your current energy demands and to lessen your impact on the environment, you should research geothermal energy. There are a great many benefits, but there are also some high costs associated with having a system installed in the home. It might be a good idea to wait until the costs of this type of system come down in price a little bit. Figure out how much you can expect to save on your energy bill and determine if the initial cost of installation is worth the money.

Susan Pitters asked:

The future of design lies in resource-efficient, sustainably harvested, and healthy materials.

There are many manufacturing companies working on even better environmentally responsible materials suitable

for kitchen countertops. Some of these are listed below, but there are many others and it is worth your time

to research these materials - if you are seriously looking for ways to create a new kitchen using sustainable,

green materials.

A recent example of a company releasing a new material that fits the bill for environmentally-responsible

products to use in home construction, is Cosentino.

  • It has taken Cosentino a great investment in time and money, but finally they have come up

with a recycled countertop material for use in kitchen and bathrooms. The countertop is called ‘Eco’

     and has recently been launched.

Cosentino is the largest manufacturer of quartz in the world and one of the largest natural stone importers.

Eco is made up of 75% recycled consumer and industrial raw materials and 25%

natural elements. It looks very like an engineered stone or solid surface material, and is available in

    10 colors at the moment.

The company says that it has performed well in tests for scorching, staining and scratching resistance.

The actual recycled materials include mirrors, windows and bottled glass, granulated glass from consumer

recycling practices,  porcelain from domestic products such as tiles, sinks and toilets, stone scrap from

quarries and mountains and fabrication, furnace residuals (ash) from factories and a bonding agent

containing 22% corn oil resin, also the result of research into eco-friendly resin.

Many designers, architects and consumers will be excited about using this revolutionary material that meets the

challenge to produce environmentally responsible materials for construction. By “upcycling” these products, the

company is using materials at the end of their lifecycle that would otherwise be put into landfill sites. Re-using

the projected amount of glass bottles every year, for example, means that landfill

    space will be significantly reduced.

The surface is hard, durable and non-porous and doesn’t require sealers. A matte leather texture as well as

a polished texture is available. Eco comes in slabs and tiles. It can be used commercially and residentially.

Eco is a beautiful looking countertop that has the added bonus of minimizing our carbon footprint.

  •
  • Another green material for countertops is “Vertazzo”, an attractive solid terrazzo countertop made from recycled

glass and cast concrete. It is durable and tough as granite, but not as porous as marble. Now a designer choice,

vertazzo is very beautiful… the polished glass looks extraordinary in the concrete, picking out colors

in the rest of your kitchen in a subtle and luxurious way. This material gives off no odors or fumes and there are any

number of finishes. What makes it green? Terrazzo is an aggregate of glass, stone and binders and several

companies use high amounts of recycled glass, up to 100%. The recycled content diverts glass from landfills

which is a tremendous benefit to the environment. Some terrazzo is made with concrete making the indoor

applications extremely benign in regard to indoor air quality.

  • Shetkastone has produced a material from pre and post consumer waste paper, cloth fibers and paint. All by-products can be recycled back into the

manufacturing process. The ’stone’ looks just like natural stone and comes in different colors.

Best of all, it can be recycled again if it needs to be replaced. While it has the look of stone,

it can be cut and screwed like wood. It is water and stain resistant.

  • Eco top surfaces are a blend of bamboo fiber, and recycled wood fiber from demolition sites. Bamboo is a very

easily renewable source; it takes 3 to 6 years to regrow bamboo for harvesting. However, processing consumes a lot of

    energy when

the bamboo is converted to synthetic building materials such as laminated planking and flooring. More importantly,

because bamboo products are mainly from countries like China, they have to be transported over great distances

before reaching Western markets. The materials are bound by a water-based resin formula. It is best not to have

    too near a wet area.

  • Alkemi is an innovative material being used in countertops. It is made up of 2 materials…curled shavings of

aluminium  from scrap (everything from aerospace to household appliances) and polymetric resin. This resin is

made of a material similar to polyester. Alkemi can be moulded and joined as needed, and it is very durable.

The surface is unique and the coils of aluminium reflect light in a beautiful fashion. If you are tired of

    granite…look at this.

  • Sqak Mountain Stone is another eco-friendly material that resembles soapstone or limestone. It is made of

recycled paper, recycled glass, coal fly-ash and cement. The material is hand cast into slabs. The look is

    very natural, warm and solid.

  • Metal Tiles are sleek 100% recycled aluminium and give off a glint that reflects surrounding colors.

The smooth surface is an exciting contrast to the other textures around it in the kitchen. It is best used

as an accent in smaller amounts rather than a large expanse. Eleek’s aluminium tiles come in a few different

metallic colors - bronze, red, silver, black and rock.

  • Trinity Glass products are made from recycled glass and low-carbon cement. They are composite surfaces that look like a very

polished stone. Many colors are available.

  • Lithistone is made from natural sand and stone of different grades, recycled materials,

organic mineral pigments and a natural mineral binder. It can be customized to meet almost any size, color, shape and textural

specifications. The way in which lithistone is created, is environmentally responsible.

  • Richlite makes paper based countertops too. Made from environmentally sustainable sources, the company

manufactures attractive, durable, long-lasting materials. The fibrous materials made from paper-fiber composites

soaked in phenolic resin. The countertops  are as strong as stone, but, of course, not as heavy.

Richlite doesn’t release harmful gases into the air - it is Green Guard certified for Children & Schools

(the highest possible rating) with no detectable level of off gassing.

  • Durapalm is harvested from coconut palms - this wood is slightly stronger than oak.  Duraplam’s co-friendliness

rating is 100% as it is derived from old, nonfruiting palms grown in plantations in many parts of the world.Palms

produce nuts for about 80 years and then are removed and replaced. Coconut palmwood can vary greatly in color

and density. Only the hard, dark palm is used for its beauty and durable surface.

  • Lumicor is very similar in construction to that of solid surface countertops. Lumicor is made from clear

resins such as acrylic or PETG and is blended

with core decorative materials. These core design elements can be metallic, neutrals, botanicals, wood workings,

color ways or embosses.  Lumicor looks similar to glass and provides exceptional clarity when

used as countertops. It is extremely durable, non porous and resistant to UV damage. Scratches and stains can be

easily removed using polishing discs. It is half the

weight of glass countertops and can resist impact forces 42x greater than tempered glass. Lumicor can be

manipulated with wood working tools and is extremely versatile. It is available in a range of patterns and

    colors.

  • As most recycled glass countertops are one piece and cut to order, they are extremely hygienic as they cannot

support food and dirt. There are no seams or joins.

Glass is non-porous and relatively stain proof as well as being extremely heat resistant

(up to 700 degrees). Glass countertops are quite  difficult to keep clean as finger prints and moisture

marks show easily if not dried off well. To maintain, just use a non abrasive cleaner and polish regularly.

Still sold on stone? Natural stone, like granite, is beautiful and durable but a finite resource. The quarry and

    mining of natural

stone has a negative impact on ecosystems including water quality. Natural stone also uses a lot of energy

in transport so it carries a heavy resource burden.

Often the cost of using environmentally -friendly materials puts people off even considering them.

Actually, the price of using eco friendly materials is usually about the same as any other materials.

Most major companies are now manufacturing these environmentally responsible alternatives.

Wood, metal and glass are all great options for improving the aesthetics of your kitchen, and are all eco friendly.

Beautiful benchtops are manufactured from recycled glass - only look at them in your nearest showroom and you’ll

be amazed at how pretty and functional they can be…

By taking advantage of the current kitchen trends when it comes to eco-friendly ideas, you are ensuring health

benefits for your family and setting a great example for others to follow.

Whichever option you decide upon, the choices for eco friendly countertops are many, and you’re sure to find one

that fits your design when planning your new eco-friendly kitchen.

A little extra care here and there when it comes to your car, and you will find yourself saving significant amounts of money, not just on repairs, but on fuel as well!

Keep your engine tuned up. A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as thirty percent. This means less money in your wallet. Follow the service schedules listed in your owners manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended.

It may not always fit into your schedule, but it is important to make yourself follow up with your car care maintenance schedule. If the dealer is charging an arm and a leg for a tune up, get a second opinion at a local reputable car repair shop. They can do the same service schedule, usually at a greater savings to you. These tune ups not only keep your car running smoothly, but they will help when you are ready for a newer vehicle. A smooth running car means a better trade in value for you.

Check your tires for proper inflation. Under-inflation actually wastes fuel. It causes your engine to work harder to push the vehicle. Wheels that are out of line, as evidenced by uneven tread wear or vehicle pulling, make the engine work harder too. Keep those tires inflated properly, and you will save when you fill up.

Drive gently. Avoid sudden accelerations and the jerky stop and go routine. Use cruise control on open highways to keep your speed as steady as possible.

Avoid excessive idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family. Todays vehicles are designed to warm up fast, so theres no need to warm your car up for half an hour on cold winter mornings.

Keep your air conditioner in top condition.

Remove extra items from the vehicle. Less weight means better mileage. Storing luggage in the trunk rather than on the roof reduces air drag. All these little things add up

Plan your daily errands to eliminate unnecessary driving. Try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop and go conditions.

Join a car pool. At least, ask if someone wants to share a ride if you are just headed one place and then back. Remember, how you drive your car, and how its fluids, old parts, and tires are disposed of all affect the environment. So take good care of your baby car. Go the extra mile for it, and it will run the extra miles for you.

Climate change caused by humans is still a widely debated topic. Studies produce conflict data and predictions about changing global weather patterns. Some scientists argue that the Earth’s climate fluctuates naturally with time and that humans are not the cause of any detected changes in weather trends. Almost all scientists can agree that something about the Earth’s climate is changing. Polar ice caps are slowly melting. It is suspected by some that the main culprit climate change caused by humans is greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide are believed to trap heat in the Earths atmosphere, which is steadily increasing the temperature of the planet.

In order to reduce the amount of green house gasses that human beings create from daily life many people have decided to convert their automobile over to running on an Alternative Source of Fuel Automobiles are one of the largest sources of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Propane fuel conversion kits are becoming increasingly popular. Running an automobile on propane produces less greenhouse gases than an automobile that uses gasoline. Installing a propane dual fuel conversion kit can also increase overall gas mileage and reduce the cost of your fuel. Installing a LPG conversion kit in your automobile can cost between a thousand and five thousand dollars.

There are other kinds of Alternative Fuel Vehicles that do not have the same advantages as a vehicle running on propane. Electric cars do not have the same gas mileage advantages as a car that runs on a liquid fuel, but they do reduce greenhouse emissions. Ethanol is another alternative fuel that is becoming more popular. Brazil has more automobiles that run on ethanol than on standard gasoline. Another advantage to using alternative fuel vehicles is reducing dependency on foreign oil. Some people feel that reducing dependency on foreign oil will help strengthen domestic economies.

    Avery Mann asked:

When Henry Ford told a New York Times reporter that ethyl alcohol was “the fuel of the future” in 1925, he truly believed it. It was in fact, a sentiment shared by the entire automobile industry. “The fuel of the future is going to come from fruit like that  sumach out by the road, or from apples, weeds, sawdust — almost anything,” he said. “There is fuel in every bit of vegetable matter that can be fermented. There’s enough alcohol in one year’s yield of an acre of potatoes to drive the machinery necessary to cultivate the fields for a hundred years.” Of course his forecast was never realized, because by that time any distilled alcohol was outlawed. The 18th Amendment had been in effect since 1919, and would stay the law of the land until 1933, unfortunately.  This time line coincides with the enormous growth of the automobile industry.

Back then, there wasn’t yet a gas station on every corner. In fact, Henry Ford’s Model T came in a variation that allowed the driver to switch the carburetor to run the engine on farm-made ethyl alcohol. Most farms at that time were equipped with stills so this allowed the driver to refuel when needed. Remember that Fords vision was for everyone to be able to have an automobile. This did not sit well with John D. Rockefeller, who had even backed Ford financially. His Standard Oil Company had a monopoly on gasoline and he wanted all automobiles to run on it. Ford and the rest of the industry just wanted to sell their autos to everyone, and the most readily available fuel was distilled alcohol. What Rockefeller did next was brilliant. His actions however, would change the entire history of not just the United States but the entire world, leading to the energy and security problems of today.

Rockefeller saw an opportunity to take advantage of the Alcohol Temperance Movement that had been trying to limit the use of alcohol for more than 25 years. He gave the equivalent of $60million in today’s dollars to an obscure group pushing for the complete elimination of alcohol called the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Rockefeller took a stand against alcohol and turned what was essentially a local effort to curb consumption into a national movement that eventually led to prohibition. He made sure that the bill included anything distilled, alcoholic or not. Thus making sure that all vehicles would run on his gasoline. His greed has brought us to where we are today.

Were you aware that bio diesel, electric and HHO  technology is not as difficult or expensive as we have been led to believe? I will give you the facts on  these conversions, and a source to find out more if you’re interested.

Like biodiesel, biofuels are not only stemming the tide of global warming but helping  support American agriculture. The critics though, argue that it takes almost as much energy (thus adding to pollution) to create them, as you might get from the clean fuel itself. I feel that anyone making ethanol should be required to utilize only clean energy, like solar and wind power, to process the fuel. Of course, there are those who are not waiting for this to happen, and have decided to take matters into their own hands.

You can’t just dump a few gallons of vegetable oil in your tank however. You will ruin your engine. The conversion is grassroots technology, and for the most part a do it yourself process. Although the government seems to be behind it in theory, I wouldn’t go changing over until you investigate it thoroughly. If you are interested in learning more about homemade biodiesel however, there is a source.

Most of the manufacturers of electric cars just don’t get it. They expect that to save the planet we will put up with 50 mile range before having to recharge, and a  speed of 60mph.Even imports, with all the talk of being so advanced in hybrid technology, don’t offer anything that gets more than forty mpg. They should be selling cars that get twice that mpg. The technology exits, and it is no where near as expensive as everyone leads us to believe. Well, there are some do it yourselfers’ that promise their conversion will give you 100 mile range, and it only cost a few hundred dollars. I think that if you are someone that does not drive on the highways often, an electric car might be perfect. In addition the government will give you a tax credit for driving a clean fuel vehicle.

Although hydrogen cells are what most experts claim to be the fuel of the future, I have found a grassroots movement that uses water as fuel today. You will still  have to take the occasional trip to the gas pump, because water is supplemental to your gas or diesel fuel, and 100% water cars are still on the drawing board. Moreover,  extracting energy from water to double or triple your fuel economy is VERY EASY. This is not new technology. People have been using water to gas converters in vehicles for  years.  This is proven technology. Using a simple device, you can use the electricity from your battery to separate water (H2O) into a gas known as HHO.  HHO is two parts’ Hydrogen and one part Oxygen. HHO is a supercharged gas that burns effectively and produces significant energy, greatly improving your fuel economy.  Incredibly, the waste product is water! The green car of the future just might be sitting in your driveway. Because the hydrogen is produced On-Demand, this technology is perfectly safe for you and your passengers. Imagine going from 20-25 mpg,  to 50-60 mpg or more,  and at the same time reducing your carbon foot print.

Well these are the options you have if you’re not thinking of buying an electric or hybrid in the near  future. Obviously, I couldn’t go into great detail in this article, but if I have piqued your interest, you can get all the facts at:

    Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Many vehicles are fueled by diesel, but with the increasing demand for environmentally safer fuels many diesel users are asking for better alternatives, too. Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuel. It’s a vegetable oil-based fuel that can run in an unmodified, or slightly modified, diesel engine. It is produced through a chemically-refined process called trans-esterification. Essentially, biodiesel is a renewable fuel made by a chemical reaction of alcohol and vegetable or animal oils, fats, or greases, that seaparates the glycerins in the oil from the methyl esters. It is methyl esters which form the biodiesel and they can be merged with regular diesel or it can be used alone. Biodiesel is biodegradable, nontoxic, and free of sulfur.

    Pros Of Using Biodiesel

Contrary to popular beliefs, biodiesel is not raw vegetable oil. As an alternative fuel, biodiesel must be manufactured according to strict industry specifications in order to insure proper performance and is the only alternative fuel to have fully completed the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act. Biodiesel is nearly carbon-neutral, which means it contributes almost zero emissions to global warming.

Biodiesel has fewer emissions than standard diesel, is biodegradable, and is a renewable source of energy. The exhaust emissions of sulfur and its related compounds contribute to the formation of acid rain; carbon monoxide is a widely recognized toxin; and carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect. There are also some lesser known emission compounds that cause concern, such hydrocarbons that have been linked to the formation of certain types of cancer. Particulate matter has negative health effects upon the lungs, and unburned hydrocarbons contribute to the formation of smog and ozone. These are basically eliminated when biodiesel is used instead of regular diesel. Biodiesel also lubricates the engine better than petroleum diesel, which helps reduce engine friction and wear and extends engine life.

    Cons Of Using Biodiesel

Of course, as with any other fuel source, biodiesel has its downsides. Pure biodiesel gets slushy at a little under 32
