If you’ve grown tired of having to double check every label that says danger, caution, or warning, or if you’ve gone through the supermarket and found those hardly pronounceable chemicals on the back of those tried and tested cleaners discomforting, then it’s about time you opted for environmentally friendly household cleaning products. The good thing about using natural cleaning recipes or “alternative recipes” is that it doesn’t pollute your environment with toxic chemicals. It’s also considerably inexpensive and you can modify each recipe to specifically meet your own cleaning needs. Another is that despite there being a lot of “green” cleaning products on the market, some of them still contain certain chemicals that can be hazardous to your health. Remember that you can never be 100% certain.

When making your own environmentally friendly household cleaning products, it’s good to know the basic ingredients. The five most commonly used items in alternative cleaning are the following:

White Distilled Vinegar - cuts grease, removes mold and mildew, softens fabric, disinfects, removes stains and even mineral build up.

Baking Soda - cleans, scours, deodorizes, softens water, and does wonders as a toilet cleaner. Consider this as your all-around cleaner.

Soap - in all its forms can clean just about anything. Just be sure not to use the petroleum-based ones as they can leave nasty marks.

Borax - has a similar function to vinegar. It cleans, deodorizes, disinfects softens water and can be used on painted walls and floors without damaging its surface.

Washing Soda - or SAL soda can be used on walls, tiles, sinks and tubs. The only problem with using it is that it can irritate the sinuses.

Once you’ve got all the ingredients ready, then it’s finally time to start making your own environmentally friendly household cleaning products. Let’s start by making an all-purpose cleanser that you can use around the house. Although there are various recipes for this, my favorite is putting together 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and ½ cup hot water. What’s great about this mix is that it cleans and freshens, leaving a nice citrus scent after I’m done.

For big jobs like the bathroom, vinegar and baking soda is all you’ll really need. Baking soda can remove rings on the tub and mold buildup on tiles. Vinegar, on the other hand can clean clear out those tough toilet bowl rings by being left in the bowl overnight and can also be used to wipe clean mirrors and plastic shower curtains. If you’ll need drain cleaner, pour ½ cup to a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by one cup of vinegar. Let the mixture foam for several minutes before following up by pouring about a gallon of boiling water down the drain. You can use this method every one to two weeks to keep the drain from clogging.

Furniture polish is something that you can make by putting together the juice of one lemon with one teaspoon olive oil and a teaspoon of water. Spread this mixture thinly onto the wooden surface and let it sit for five minutes before buffing with a soft rag. In case you have anymore lemons left over, cut one in half and sprinkle baking soda over the slice. You can use this to clean dishes, surfaces and stains in the kitchen. The other half can be used to shine brass and copperware.

When making your own environmentally friendly household cleaning products, as with any recipe, remember to follow the instructions and save the experimenting and substituting of other ingredients for later. For testing how effective your mixture is, start with small areas or nondescript surfaces first.

Alternative fuels are still in its early stages. They are past the embryonic stage, but that doesn’t mean it has matured yet. There are many things to consider with alternative fuels and, such is the case with any new technology, there are pros and cons to alternative fuel.

The pros are obvious, save money and save environment. But are the pros and cons of alternative fuel really that black and white? Proponents of both sides could probably go on for days about why alternative fuel is either good or bad.

Here are important benefits of alternative fuels.

- It burns cleaner fuels. With cleaner emissons comes cleaner air. It is also a way to reduce global warming. There will be less CO2 in the air, thus eliminating the green-house effect gases.

- Alternative fuels burn more efficiently. This means better mileage for your tank, which everyone knows translates into saved money. By using alternative fuels, the miles your car has to go before you need to fill up will take longer and longer. Depending on the vehicle, you can get anywhere from 10 to 50 percent better gas mileage.

- Using alternative fuels will eliminate the Unites States’ dependency on foreign oil. This relationship has led to wars, criminal behavior and deaths. The United States can only gain by getting rid of the dependency.

Anytime you argue pros and cons of alternative fuel, you can’t forget the disadvantages just because the advantages are so great. There are still drawbacks to alternative fuel vehicles, which is probably a reason why they aren’t widespread yet. However, there are more and more commercials for greener vehicles popping up on television everyday.

- Alternative fuels vehicles are more expensive than their gasoline counterparts. Right now, it would take a few years to recoup the money in gas that you paid extra for your green vehicle. In some cases, such as SUV hybrids, it may take over five years. While you are saving at the gas pump, you shelled out the extra money to have a cleaner, more efficient vehicle.

- Alternative fuel options aren’t readily available. Hybrids are coming onto the market quicker and there are more E85 vehicles (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline), but the options drop off from there. As much as there is talk of biodiesels and other methods, the cars aren’t easily available. And, if you do own an E85 vehicle, gas stations aren’t easy to come by. Some people have to go out of their way just to get fuel.

- Because the technology is still new, there aren’t many places to service the vehicle if something should go wrong. In addition, classes and training will have to be done for more people to learn about it. That is going to take an unlimited amount of time.

The debate of pros and cons of alternative fuel will go on forever. The most important thing about alternative fuels is that it is helping the environment. Saving money or waiting to make it back is just a secondary effect.

“Reusable Bags, now there’s an idea that won’t catch on”, might have been the thinking a few years ago or so. Yet now the world is in economic and environmental meltdown, most major stores are now offering some sort of reusable shopping bag to their customers.

As the environmental issues have gained momentum and the problem of huge waste resulting from millions ( UK consumers in the year 2000 used more than 17 million plastic carrier bags ) of plastic bags that are not biodegradable and harmful to the planet, being given away with almost every purchase and then simply discarded, the need for change was inevitable.

What are the benefits of having a reusable bag?

Well there are many but for example if the bag is a printed cotton bag, then they can be sturdier than your common plastic bag, with less worry about it breaking when carrying something heavier.

Then there are the huge commercial benefits with company branding designs placed conveniently on the bag wherever the retailer desires and you have yourself some of the most affordable advertising available. Billboard and sign advertising is very costly and often businesses can’t afford to pay for that level of exposure.

If then businesses either give their new printed cotton reusable bags away with purchases or charge a small fee for them, the benefits are obvious. Lots of happy shoppers walking up and down the town centre with your logo emblazoned all over their bags, reaching places billboards can never reach.

This evidence alone should convince environmentally minded retailers and consumers that the transfer to reusable bags is both a healthy one and a potentially profitable one, as apparently the production and cost of these reusable bags is very economical.

In July 2005 the Scottish Parliament introduced a bill calling for the levy on plastic bags. The environmental committee of the Scottish Parliament said, “In practice, the Bill would require all retailers to charge customers 10p for every plastic bag they were supplied with.

The Bill aims to protect the environment by reducing the number of plastic bags in circulation, raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage consumers to use alternatives.”

In the long term reusable printed cotton bags will cost less per bag than the proposals planned for in store plastic bags.

Common sense tells us that this can surely be the only way forward with regards to this issue and there are numerous websites that specialise in printing and producing these cotton reusable bags, many of them offering a huge selection of styles, colours and designs.

Tom Tessin asked:

Most people today are looking for a better and safer vehicle that will cost us less to operate when it comes to buying fuel. Many people are seriously looking at buying hybrids because of the savings on fuel. Most hybrid vehicles get a much better mileage and need fewer repairs over the years than the gasoline driven cars of the past. The problem for most people is the fact that since hybrid vehicles are relatively new they are afraid that they may not be able to find the alternative fuel whenever they need it. Alternative fuels are not yet readily accessible like the modern day service stations that provide gasoline on every corner. The makers of the hybrid vehicles are starting to recognize this factor and are now getting busy finding a method for the consumer to find what alternative fuel needed for his vehicle.

Some alternative fuels such as diesel fuel is very easily found at the service stations while other fuels such as methane or a place for an electric vehicle is not so easily made available. The alternative fuel situation is predicted to become a serious problem in the early part of this century since there are more and more hybrid vehicles but less alternative fuel stations available for the consumer.

The use of an alternative fuel is readily accepted by people in foreign countries and the growth of alternative fuel stations seems to be going hand and hand together. The problem with the American market is the oil companies do not want to give up their place in the market as the leader in fuel providers. The oil companies do not want to take a chance that the American Manufacturers will make hybrid vehicles that will no longer need the power of gasoline and that are why they fight the idea of alternative fuels. It is much safer to use some of the fuels that are made from natural products like corn and oats which is better for our eco system than it is to use the gasoline that the oil companies produce.

The eco system and even the fact that our economy would be better is not the concern of the big oil industrialist their concern is all about the money. Let’s face it we hit the pockets pretty sternly if everyone no longer needed oil. The demand would shake the oil industry causing them to tumble and perhaps some of the wars that we are now engaged in would no longer be necessary. The most of the oil is found in the Middle East while products to make the alternative fuels can be grown in America. We pay farmers millions of dollars a year not to grow corn but if we were using it to make an alternative gas then everyone would profit in America today!

Hopefully by now, you have a better understanding on what kind of alternative fuels are out there. There are so many great causes that can help you save money. As the world grows, so will the alternative fuels!
