Consumers are becoming more and more aware of the affects that every day household items can have on the environment. Let’s face it, going “green” has become hip. Americans are increasingly looking for products that do not harm the environment.

Manufacturers are jumping on the trend towards environmentally friendly products in big way. In fact, even the standard tried and true garden hose is getting an extreme makeover these days.

Have decided to replace that old garden hose with an eco-friendly one? If so, here are few guidelines that will help you choose the right one.

Recycled Materials

A true earth friendly garden hose should be made from at least 50% recycled material, usually polyurethane or rubber, or a combination of both. Polyurethane hoses are generally much lighter than an all rubber hose. From an environmentally friendly perspective, the more recycled material in the hose you choose, the better.

Water Conservation

Water may one day very soon be Earth’s most precious resource. The conservation is water is critical and hose manufacturers have stepped up to do their part. Eco-friendly hoses today use patented water restrictors that control pressure and help avoid soil erosion and puddling. A good hose will use at least 50% less water than a traditional garden hose.

Lighter and More Flexible

Recycled polyurethane is 2-3 times lighter than all rubber hoses. Look for a light hose that still contains a UV protective coating. Without it, the hose could become cracked much easier after exposure to direct sunlight. This will also prevent the hose from kinking as well.

Drinking Safety

Everyone who has taken a drink for a garden hose has probably has this thought: “just how safe is this water after traveling from the spigot to the other end?”. With today’s eco-friendly hoses, this is no longer a concern. As with other products bearing the name, “green” garden hoses use non-toxic substances and are completely safe to drink from.

Environmentally safe hoses come in all sizes and lengths. Next time you go to replace your old hose, consider purchasing one that is not only easier to use, but better for the environment as well.

The Department of Defense (DOD) is asking companies to submit proposals for supplying 200 million gallons of alternative or synthetic fuel in anticipation of major field tests of vehicles and vessels by the Air Force and Navy in 2008 and 2009. The field tests are part of a broader effort by the Pentagon to reduce its dependence on foreign oil with cleaner-burning fuels that would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The switch by the DOD from conventional fuels to alternative fuels is one that experts have seen coming for years. The DOD is probably the largest vehicle fleet in the United States and with the government being concerned about gas prices as well as environmental problems, having the DOD go to alternative fuel for its vehicles is a great move on their part.

This request from the DOD could really help the average consumer as it will boost production of alternative fuels and possibly bring them into the general market as a viable alternative to gasoline. However, the request could have a major impact on the alternative fuels market if the military decides to move forward following the tests because the Pentagon is the single largest buyer of fuel in the country.

Under the possible purchase, the Air Force and Navy through the DOD would each receive 100 million gallons of alternative fuels for testing on ships, airplanes and other operational units. Those fuels would likely be blended with existing DOD fuel types in a 50/50 mixture or similar ratio.

There won’t be enough alternative fuels to do a 100 percent alternative blend for at least a decade according to the DOD. But even reducing petroleum usage by 50 percent in this country is huge. What the DOD is saying is that they don’t want carbon dioxide greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere and they want to do everything they can to alleviate that problem.

Each of the military services wants to maintain its current single-fuel policy, under which all vehicles are run with as similar a fuel type as possible. DOD officials want to use 50/50 alternative fuel/gasoline blends widely for the service tests at first, with an eye to potentially retooling the ratio for optimum efficiency later on. But that may be a problem as many engines will have to be adapted to accommodate the alternative fuel and burn it correctly.

With the DOD coming on board in the push to make alternative fuel less alternative, we may be seeing a real switch when it comes to fueling our vehicles. It could be very advantageous to many people including the Earth’s population.

The latest economic rescue package is not helping much for the general public, at least for a good half a year before we see effects of an slight economic turnaround. Fuel prices are still escalating, food prices has not fallen, you still need to travel to work, to school and earn a living.

This is part 2 of that endless car fuel saving tips which I have started to help us tie over the money crunch.

Below is an added list of ways on achieving fuel efficiency, conserving gasoline and attaining cost savings the easy way:

Set Cruise Control At A Fix Level For Consistent Fuel Usage when driving a stretch of long freeway (or highway). This helps to reduce the intermittent and inconsistent fuel injection by human manual driving which could cause greater wear and tear to your car.

Combine Several Short Trips Helps Save Fuel And Save Money. . Once your engine is warmed up they generate less air pollution, so keep it running over a few so combining several short trips into one can make a big difference.

Park it in your Covered garage.Yes, you can save fuel and energy simply by parking your car in a covered garage whenever possible, especially in winter and summer. You would then avoid exposing your car to harsh winter snow and ice as well as the torturing summer sun. This helps you warm up the car faster in winter and cool it better in summer.

Remove Excess Baggage. Get rid of items not required on a daily basis. The most common are golf sets, snow chains, fishing gear etc. Reload on a need to use basis.

Catch that Greyhound Bus. I am not selling for The Greyhound here, but if you have to travel across states or provinces, consider taking the coach. The scenery could do you some good, not to mention the stress of driving across unfamiliar towns and provinces.

Avoid Keeping Your Engine in Idle Mode for long periods. If you are stuck in traffic and you don’t think you are going to go anywhere in the next five minutes, you may want to turn your car off. New cars do not need to be warmed up for long period of time. So as much as your pocket can help it, change to a new car. And a New Hybrid Car at that too.

Keep Good Car Habits. Before you switch off your car ignition, remember to switch off all electrical units like the car hifi sound system, air conditioning, heating gadgets, compartment lights as well as head lights. This avoids drain on your car battery, reduces maintenance costs.

Communal car pooling is definitely a viable solution to if you could find like minded colleagues who are neighbors living within your vicinity willing to pool resources.

Avoid Rush Hour. And yes, that is the very famous but always ignored suggestion. As much as procrastination gets you, try harder. In countries where they install electronic road pricing measurement ERP gadgets, you could find yourself doubling your fuel consumption, doubling your fuel costs and your travel time. Worst of all, the electronic road pricing slaps an additional toll charge whenever you pass a particular gantry at rush hour!

There are more tips to come at the next episode of Endless Money & Fuel Saving Car Tips. So stay tuned. And also visit my site for more information on car tips and hybrid cars.

A friend of mine held a job at a library in a large, public educational institution and was being harassed by an environmental group on a weekly basis because the library was not purchasing recycled paper. The fact that this cost a good deal more than the paper they were currently using which would affect struggling students did not occur to the environmental crusaders. So, though we might like to think of ourselves as altruistic human beings, the fact is that most people are not willing to inconvenience themselves to make a seemingly small impact on the environment. Carpooling is good for the increasingly toxic air and also has some very tangible benefits for participants.

Carpooling is the sharing of a car by two or more passengers to save resources or help the environment. How beneficial is carpooling to the environment? According to a study performed in 1998, cars contribute 48% of the carbon monoxide emissions into the air. In addition to carbon monoxide, cars also emit greenhouse gases. Any fluid escaping the car inevitably is washed into the storm drains which contribute heavily to water pollution. Cars have also been proven to be the main cause of noise pollution in the cities which can cause sleep trouble and general agitation for residents. Clearly, cars impact the environment severely and in many different ways, and every single one that is taken off the road is beneficial to building a healthful environment.

There are people who do not believe that the earth is in the bad shape that many scientists and politicians have been concerned with recently. It can be hard for some people to believe that their individual actions can make an impact. Carpooling can directly impact the quality of life of you and your neighbors which makes it even more rewarding. On average, a person spends $1000 a year on gas, and if one were to assume that you were just sharing the car with one person and they were making you pay for exactly half their gas, you would be saving at $500. This estimate is a bit on the high side as only a portion of the mileage taken into consideration is used to get to and from work

Brochure printing is a necessary function of your marketing operations, but it doesn’t have to be a burden for our environment. Business brochure printing can be environmentally friendly if you follow these “green” brochure printing tips.

1.    Save paper by printing smaller and more effective brochures. Avoid using large sheets of paper and create small eye-catching brochure printing designs. Use your brochure to present your main selling points and your company website address, so that you can use your online website to provide all the necessary information. You will be surprised how effective a mini brochure or postcard can be if you provide a link to your website.

2.    Recycled paper is one of the best ways to share your respect for the environment. Technology has increased so that recycled paper comes in many weights and colors for your brochure printing. If you want to add an extra “green” feel to your brochure, try unbleached recycled paper that appears slight brown. This will also add a design element that cannot be readily achieved with non-recycled papers.

3.    Re-useable brochures are a great way to reduce paper waste. In order to re-use your brochures, try to limit the use of dates or special events attributed to a time period. For example, don’t include the name of the tradeshow you are attending or a special seasonal promo. Design brochures that can be used for many years to come so you won’t be throwing out old brochures that are no longer good for use.

4.    Create unique brochures that also serve a secondary purpose. For example, a brochure might also serve as an envelope for future correspondence. A custom fold and binding solution can create a pocket in your brochure for such a purpose. Another example would be a brochure that could be used as an appointment card. Create a perforated area that can be filled out with a pen and ripped along the perforation to work as an appointment card.

The three-pronged concept of “Recycle, Reduce and Reuse” should always be considered when you are designing brochures. Recycle old brochures and use recycled paper for new brochure printing. Reduce the amount of paper used by designing smaller brochures on lighter papers. Reuse brochures for many events by designing brochures that are not limited to a time frame. Innovation is the key for additional environmentally safe practices. Come up with creative solutions to apply the above principles.

The history of alternative fuel can be found way back in the 1900’s but as a result of political and economical factors, the development of alternative fuels was short lived. Fossil fuels are still the foundation of the economy but in the 1970’s, there was a extreme fuel shortage in America that led to taking a serious look at alternative fuels.

Due to an over reliance on fossil products, America were at the mercy of foreign countries with oil reserves to run their economy. This led to a paradigm shift when in 1973, OPEC reduced its production, corresponding causing an increase in oil prices. As a result the world has to take a serious view of the reliance and in 1978, diesel engines began regaining popularity as well as other alternative fuel such as biodiesel.

Now, almost 3 decades later, the world is dawn to many other sources of alternative fuels. Ethanol is one of the fuels that is taken its place and is essentially make from grain. Researchers have come up with a certain form of grain alcohol that can power a combustion engine as well as oil-based products but more kind to the environment. In addition, it is much economical to produce too besides creating more jobs for corn farmers.

Other forms of alternative fuels are methane, propane, and hydrogen that can be used to power modern vehicles. But to effectively run such fuels on traditional engines, modifications have to be done. Thus, this led to the development of the modern alternative fuels vehicles.

Technology and environment have much less to do with the development of alternative fuels than mainly politics. To a certain degree, it is true as politicians, being politicians, tend to lean on mass opinions. With global warming becoming hip, politicians lean towards supporting and developing alternative fuels.

Whatever the motive, it has been proven beyond any doubts that alternative fuels contribute effectively to the environment. In retrospect when it comes to the development of alternative fuels, great advancement has been made and the present and near future, new technologies will emerge to make it an exciting technology.

Different types of alternative fuels continue to make big stride and will continue as fossil fuels are limited and will in due course dry up. Being environmental conscious is essential but alternative replacements are necessary and scientists will continue to make alternative fuels technologies more cost effective as well as efficient to use so that the masses will take to it.

Alan Drakovic asked:

The use of alternative fuel is common nowadays because it is cheaper than gasoline or diesel. Also, alternative fuels contain substances which are environment friendly, as such, it can help save and conserve natural resources that are used in order to produce gasoline and provide efficient and clean fuel combustion.

One basic thing to know about alternative fuel is it may be readily used today. The most common machine that is powered by alternative fuel is a car or vehicle. There are many forms of fuel alternative available that may be used in one’s vehicle; it includes liquefied petroleum gas, ethanol, methanol, compressed natural gas, and electricity. The good thing about alternative fuel is that it cost less but without sacrificing the mileage. In addition, its components are made of substances that reduce the risk air pollution. A classic example is electricity. If your car is powered by electricity, there is no chance that air pollution may be emitted.

As stated a while ago, alternative fuel helps save the environment. It removes the risk of creating carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned hydrocarbons and other particulate materials. The poisonous emissions stated usually come from gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and machineries. Alternative fuel minimizes these kinds of emissions, if not absolutely obliterate it.

Another thing to know about alternative fuel is that its materials can be found anywhere, including your own backyard. Some materials include old frying oil, used vegetable oil, recycled paper, plant wastes, animal manure, and other recyclable materials. However, don’t even think about putting vegetable oil in your vehicle. There is a process in converting these materials into alternative fuel.

Some fuel alternative uses a specific vehicle or engine in order to completely operate. This is commonly called as alternative fuel vehicle. Alternative fuel vehicles use a specific alternative fuel in order to work. Am example is an electricity powered car. When using this kind of vehicle, one must charge its battery in order to use it. It is like charging the battery of a digital camera or a cellular phone. The problem with alternative fuel vehicle is that they have a lower energy output. This means that gasoline or diesel vehicles provide farther mileage as compared to alternative fuel vehicles on a full tank basis. Another thing to take note is that alternative fuel vehicles cost more than the conventional gasoline or diesel automobile.

Fuel alternatives are not only used in vehicles, it may also be used in one’s industry or for the industrial operations. Some industrial machines use gasoline or diesel in order to function. Since diesel or gasoline is used, alternative fuel may be used as a replacement. Other industries are compelled by a law or a local ordinance to switch from gasoline to alternative fuels not only to minimize air population, but also to help the government to reduce the production of gasoline and diesel.

Globally, countries opt to operate every machine using alternative fuels. Air pollution is a big problem that a country needs to remedy. Through the use of alternative fuel, it will not only save our environment, but also, be an effective way to conserve our very limited resources.
