going green
Confused Little Flower asked:

With every thing “going green” is there a craft magazine that has projects made from recyclables?

Is there a magazine that has projects that are made from old items that you would normally throw out? Preferably projects that are fun and easy to make.

Every April there’s one day when we all try to come together for a greater good. No, it’s not Tax Day — it’s Earth Day on April 22nd. While most people know about Earth Day and its environmental significance, few of us know how Earth Day got started!

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, there was growing concern over the state of the environment. Most notably seen across college campuses and grassroots organizations, this environmental focus also grew in importance within the political sphere. In 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson suggested a demonstration to help gain attention for environmental causes. A year later on April 22nd, the first official Earth Day was held with over 20 million people participating — a giant step for the modern environmental movement!

Since the inception of Earth Day, the holiday has become an international effort to improve environmental sustainability from air quality and global warming to wildlife protection and recycling efforts. In 1992, the United Nations recognized the growing need to maintain environmental health with an Earth Summit in Rio de Jainero.

While Earth Day has changed a great deal from its original demonstration-based format, the goal remains the same. Now, there’s a greater emphasis on clean energy and the reduction of global warming, but one fact is undeniable: Earth Day is growing in importance across the world. Nearly a billion people across the world participated in last year’s Earth Day activities.

In addition to focusing on a very real and pressing issue, Earth Day also brings people of different cultures, nationalities, religions, and races together to strive for a common goal. Celebrated in over 175 countries, Earth Day is considered “the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a half billion people every year,” according to Earth Day Network. This year, become a part of this exciting and important holiday — and spread the word to your friends and family!

What You Can Do:

There are tons of ways you can celebrate Earth Day by yourself or with friends and family! Some of the things you can do to help the environment are:

•Plant a tree: Help keep the planet green one tree at a time! Trees help absorb carbon dioxide, thereby reducing your carbon footprint. For more information on planting, tree care, and what trees are best for your area and the environment, please visit the Arbor Day Foundation (http://www.arborday.org/).

•Make your home Earth friendly: While so many environmental efforts focus on the outdoors, there are an endless number of ways you can make your home more “green.” From compact florescent light bulbs and Energystar appliances (http://www.energystar.gov/) to organic, locally grown foods and natural pest control (http://www.ecosmart.com/), there are a growing number of products to help you keep your home Earth friendly. Visit www.healthychild.org for simple ways to keep your home healthy for your family and the planet.

•Donate to a worthy environmental cause: You don’t have to get down and dirty if you don’t want to; donations to well respected environmental organizations ensure that you’re helping the causes you find important. And don’t forget — sometimes these groups need the items you just have gathering dust in your garage! Visit www.charitynavigator.org or similar sites to find a reputable organization.

•Walk, bike, or carpool to reduce emissions: Sometimes, it’s the changes you make in your daily life that will have the greatest impact on the environment. Do something good for your health and the planet by walking or biking to work or to run errands. If you live too far away, consider carpooling or taking public transportation.

•Start a recycling program in your community: If your community doesn’t already have the resources for recycling, you can always take your items to a recycling center. However, if you make the extra effort to create a convenient recycling solution within your neighborhood, more people are likely to recycle as well. At http://earth911.org/recycling/ you can find what items can be recycled as well as how and where to recycle them.

•Know your carbon footprint: How do you measure up in terms of the amount of Carbon Dioxide you and your family produce? See where you stand compared to the national average by calculating your personal contribution to global warming at www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/. You might be surprised enough to adopt cleaner forms of energy.

Alternative fuels may seem like a new topic or new invention but in reality companies, organizations and individuals have been researching and developing new ways to power vehicles. In fact, regular gasoline has contained ethanol for some years now and many countries around the global are mandating minimum ethanol requirements. For example, Canada, the United States, Britain, Argentina and Brazil all require a certain percentage of ethanol to gasoline. And as time passes, each couple of years, the minimum increases.

So what are alternative fuels and how do they differ from fossil fuels such as gasoline, kerosene and diesel? These fuels have limited life spans in the sense that when all the oil supply is depleted fossil fuels will no longer exist. Contrarily, alternative fuels are sustainable resources made from various biodegradable substances such as sugar cane, wheat, and corn. Alternative fuels are normally produced from food sources, waste food products, plants and other organisms that can be replenished and continue to grow.

The most prominent alternative fuels in the automotive gasoline market are ethanol and biodiesel. In Canada and the US, ethanol, an alcohol, is typically made with corn or wheat. It is then mixed with gasoline to create a cleaner burning fuel. But the problem still lies with the gasoline portion. As long as gas can be produced, things are fine. But as soon as gas shortages begin, it will be necessary to turn to other fuels. Further, gas is harmful to the environment and to people due to the pollution and the smog. Again new, friendlier technologies are needed. Lastly, with the current state of the economy, gas prices are very high leading consumers to wonder whether better methods of fueling vehicles are available.

Countries who are enforcing minimum mixes of ethanol and gas are ranging from two percent to five percent to ten percent. Experts claim that fifteen to twenty percent of ethanol is the largest amount that can be mixed without having to physically change the mechanisms of present day vehicles. But there are already cars being manufactured that can take as much as eighty-five percent ethanol. The biggest problem is the starting of a vehicle. Apparently, using gas as an igniter is very easy but ethanol is more difficult.

Many areas are also trying to find alternative sources of ethanol than the standard sugar cane, wheat and corn based products. Mesquite, different sweet grasses, vegetable oil, palm oil, soybean oil, recycled cooking oil, and animal fat run-offs are all being researched. In addition to these fuels, other alternative fuels already exist and have been sold for years. Many taxi fleets and delivery trucks use propane as opposed to gas and there are also electric cars.

In the US, in 2003, the president allocated just over one billion dollars to the development of hydrogen powered vehicles, particularly lightweight cars, SUVs and small pickup trucks. And while the process is agreeably very slow, it is estimated that by 2020, there could be as many as two million hydrogen fueled vehicles on the road.

Conversationally, alternative fuels are also known by other names including bio fuels, biodiesel, agro-fuels, green gas, bio energy, and non-conventional fuels.

Organic baby products are a choice that is made by a growing percentage of parents today for a number of reasons. Of course, some people don’t feel they must have a reason for selecting this type of baby product over the more standard product. It may even be related to television advertising or name recognition for a particular brand. The reasons for selecting organic baby products as opposed to traditional products will vary according to the philosophy and lifestyle of the parents, but the reasons usually fall into one or more of the following categories.

Promote the marketplace

Because modern day organic baby products are a developing market that not everyone is aware of, and because internet businesses are the most popular location for start up businesses. it only makes sense to promote the marketing of such an earth friendly product. When producers of organic baby products realize that there are parents anxious to buy such items, they are more likely to produce even more organic products to choose from. It only makes sense to assume that producers want to see the probability of positive results before expanding into a niche market too quickly. By voting with your purchases you can show the producers you understand and appreciate what they are trying to do.

Healthier children

Using organic baby products means that you have the opportunity to prevent your baby from being exposed to harmful products such as allergens, carcinogens and other irritants. Some of the dangerous products in our daily lives are only just now coming to light, and more of these are likely to show up as more research is done. Using organic baby products won’t eliminate all the difficulties and dangerous products in your baby’s life, but at least it may prevent a few problems from a health standpoint in your child’s life.

Healthier planet

When you choose organic baby products, you help to promote a healthier planet Earth. Organic baby products reduce dependence upon chemical and dangerous pesticides; eliminate the use of chemicals in dyes and coloring agents and stop the use of possible carcinogenic substances in detergents and wetting agents. Getting to a healthier planet can also be a life style for new parents, or just a consideration about the health of your own child. Either way, reducing harmful ingredients in the water, air and soil of this planet can only result in a healthier planet Earth.

Small business support

The purchase of organic baby products as opposed to more traditional products sends a message to small business owners that there is a way to succeed by buying into the concept that organic products are marketable. They can find a much more global customer base by identifying the movement to organic baby products and providing a greater inventory. If you individually and personally believe in an organic lifestyle, show your support by buying organic products whenever possible. When small businesses providing organic products have their business philosophy rewarded by increased sales, it is likely that such businesses will expand and become more viable.

On the 27th of this month, a showcase of alternative fuel vehicles used in large fleets was led by the White House. Present at the said event are the alternative fuel vehicles from UPS, the world’s largest package delivery company.

The company operates the biggest private fleet of alternative fuel vehicle in its industry. With more than 1,500 vehicles as part of their alternative fuel vehicle fleet, United Parcel Service clearly supports the administration’s “Twenty in Ten” goal. These alternative fuel vehicles are part of the showcase in White House and were inspected by the President himself.

Among the alternative fuel vehicles shown by the company at the event is their hydraulic hybrid vehicle. UPS operates the world’s first Full Hydraulic Hybrid Urban Delivery Vehicle. The said vehicle is the fruit of the collaboration between UPS, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Eaton International Truck and Engine, and the U.S. Army National Automotive Center.

Unlike hybrid electric vehicles, the other source of power in these vehicles, apart from an internal combustion engine, are its hydraulic components. The design of the vehicle is essentially based on the elimination of mechanical transmission and driveline with hydraulic components. The use of hydraulics reduces the amount of power wasted in the transmission of power from the engine to the drive wheels. The vehicle is predicted to save 60 to 70 percent of its fuel and this is based on the tests performed on it.

Aside from hydraulic hybrid vehicles, UPS’ alternative vehicle fuel fleet also includes electric hybrid vehicles. The use of an electric motor in this technology reduces the amount of fuel that needs to be burned. This, in turn, results to reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere where it increases the risk of further global warming.

UPS operates 50 units of hybrid electric vehicles and is reported to reduce fuel consumption for the company by as much as 44,000 gallons every year. Greenhouse gas emissions will also be decreased by as much as 457 metric tons every year.

UPS also uses fuel cell vehicles in collaboration with DaimlerChrysler. These vehicles produce only water as the byproduct of its operation. This means that it effectively eliminates the production of greenhouse gases. The vehicles with these technologies are also safe as Volvo S70 parts.

Aside from hybrid and fuel cell technology, UPS also makes use of liquefied natural gas as fuel for their vehicles. The company uses this fuel for large trucks since liquefied natural gas is very dense in nature. This means that the fuel provides adequate power for the amount of space it occupies in a vehicle’s tank. This fuel is best suited for large trucks that travels extended distances before refueling.

These vehicles are the company’s contribution to the reduction in the country’s consumption of petroleum products as called for by the President.

With the expense of gas nowadays as well as the emphasis put on ensuring the future of the planet by keeping the air clean, there is a surge in research for alternative fuel sources. The vehicle manufacturers are developing products to meet this demand and have invested a lot of time and money to come up with the various alternates.

Ethanol, made from corn or soybeans, is one of the more recognizable forms of alternative fuel. It has gained a lot of media exposure over the years and is beneficial in many ways. It can be made inexpensively from organic materials and trash. While it still demands gasoline for its use, the ethanol is cleaner, less expensive and allows better gas mileage than that of traditional gasoline products. Ethanol is available now and uses only fifteen percent gasoline. This is a much more economical solution.

Methanol is similar to ethanol but has a few slight differences. It can be made of wood or coal but today it is primarily made from methane. Natural gas is a much less expensive alternative and burns cleaner than gasoline also. Like ethanol, methanol is an alcohol based alternative fuel.

Propane will likely be familiar to most people. In fact, many people regularly use it for other types of ebergy. It is, however, gaining momentum as a possible alternative to gas in vehicles. Propane is much easier on the environment which is one of the reasons it is being looked at so closely. It originates in the ground but is more similar to air than petroleum and much more abundant a resource.

Electric cars were developed many years ago but never took off in popularity. However, there is a resurgence in this type of vehicle now because of the rising gas prices as well as the concern for the environment. The rechargeable car batteries allow the car to run while avoiding the use of harmful gas emissions. This classic alternative has become more readily available in recent years.

The alternative fuel that is getting the most attention, though, is hydrogen. Because it is so easy to produce and so inexpensive, this looks to be one of the most promising alternatives to gasoline available. Car manufacturers have developed the means to create these cars and the technology is continually advancing. Not only will this be an extremely efficient and inexpensive solution but it will also be a very clean product.

The greenhouse effect is in the news a lot lately. That coupled with the rising gas prices has spurred scientists from around the world to put forth a lot more effort into developing alternative fuel sources. While there are many available now, advances in the industry promise even more to come.
